Innsbruck City Guide
Capital of the state of Tyrol in Western Austria, Innsbruck is so named as it bridges the Inn Valley. This picturesque city is set against a backdrop of mountains and is renowned as a winter sports centre, but for those who are not interested in skiing Innsbruck’s charming streets affords a wealth of café’s, museums and fascinating architecture to keep you occupied.
What to do and see in and around Innsbruck
Imperial Palace
Dating back to 1460 this baroque style palace is a sight to behold. Built by Archduke Siegmund the Rich, the architect lives up to his name as the palace is lavishly furnished and filled with wonderful artworks such as portraits of the Hapsburg family.
Golden Roof
Difficult to miss, the Golden Roof is a much visited landmark and the jewel in the crown of the pastel hued medieval streets of Innsbruck’s Old Town. Dating back to the 1400s the three-story balcony with stunning golden roof was built by Archduke Friedrich IV as a royal box for Emperor Maximilian I so he could watch the tournaments that took place in the central plaza.
Imperial Church - Kenotaph Emperor Maximilian I
Home to the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I this magnificent piece of architecture is an art lover's dream, with 24 reliefs and 40 statues of Maximilian’s ancestors. There is also a Renaissance organ on display.
Ambras Castle
Built in the 16th Century this museum and castle can be attributed to Archduke Ferdinand II of Austria. Once a hub of court society it now serves as a rather picturesque and interesting attraction, with manicured grounds and a self proclaimed Gallery of Wonders containing artifacts from around the world.
Cathedral St. Jacob
This imposing building presides over the Cathedral Square and dates back to 1717. With its sumptuous interior Cathedral St. Jacob is a must see for lovers of Baroque architecture. Look out for the Madonna and child on the main altar.
Basilika Wilten
A church has stood on this site since 1259; the current Basilika Witten was designed by Josef Stapf and built in the rococo style from 1751 to 1756. This is a beautiful church, decorated in soft colours and extravagant gold, and remains a popular place of worship for the Tyrolean people.
The New Bergisel Ski Jump
Something of an architectural gem the New Bergisel Ski Jump presides over Innsbruck on Bergisel Hill. Built on the site of an old battle ground from the Tyrolean War of Independence, the jump was completed in 2002. Standing at 47 metres tall, the jump affords spectacular views over Innsbruck as well as hosting the annual Four Hills Tournament.
Swarovski Crystal World
For those interested in all things sparkly this unusual park, which was created in 1995, is a crystal lovers dream. With features such as the Crystal Calligraphy room, Crystal Dome and the Crystal Forest there are lots of features at which to marvel. Just beware of the giant alpine head with his crystal eyes!
Innsbruck City Museum
The City Museum, also known as the City Archives presents an excellent permanent exhibition of 800 years of Innsbruck’s history as well as popular revolving exhibitions.
