Zurich Theatre Spectacular

The theatres of Zürich fall under an international spotlight between August 14th and 31st, when the Zürcher Theater Spektakel - or Zürich Theatre Spectacular - returns.

Organisers describe this 18-day festival - which has been in existence since 1980 - as Zürich's fifth season, bringing performers and spectators alike to the Landiwiese on the banks of the city's lake.

Every year, more than 25 individuals and companies are invited to participate in this prestigious event, from well-known names to emerging talents. In the past, performances have been delivered by guests ranging from the Wooster Group of New York to Japanese choreographer Saburo Teshigawara.

There is also an element of competition to this showcase. Two cash awards - the ZKB Patronage and Acknowledgement prizes - are given to productions that are nominated by a panel of judges.

Shows take place in a number of venues at the Landiwiese, including a beautiful open-air stage on the lakeside. As well as taking in the various productions, visitors can enjoy the range of bars and restaurants that keep the festival atmosphere running into the night.

Add all this to the beautiful setting of Lake Zürich and the alpine backdrop and you have a recipe for a wondrous break in Switzerland.
