Vienna Jazz Festival

Fri 27 Jun 2008 - Thu 17 Jul 2008

The city of Vienna begins to swing when the Jazz festival arrives in town. This year, all the action takes place between June 27th and July 17th.

Over the years, the Vienna Jazz festival has garnered a reputation for being one of the finest events of its kind in the world. Consistently, organisers manage to bring together some of the greatest talents in jazz, soul, funk and pop.

Last year's event featured performances from the likes of Paul Anka, Roger Chapman and Carleen Anderson, while previous editions have welcomed Ryuichi Sakamoto, Herbie Hancock, Randy Newman and Solomon Burke.

The programme for 2008 is still being formulated but already the festival is shaping up to be another special period on the Viennese calendar. Confirmed for 2008 is Bobby McFerrin, who is perhaps best known to mainstream audiences as the man behind the hit Don't Worry, Be Happy, but has in fact worked with some of the greats of the jazz world during his illustrious career.

Also lined up for this year is German bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff and Brazilian protest singer Caetano Veloso, one of the driving forces behind the Tropicalismo sound.

Jazz fans heading to the festival will be generously catered for by Vienna. The city has a number of jazz clubs, including Porgy and Bess and Birdland.
