Opera Festival in Verona
Fri 20 Jun 2008 - Sun 31 Aug 2008
To hear some of the world's best loved operas in spectacular surroundings, head to Verona for its Opera Festival, which runs this year between June 20th and August 31st.
Held in the Arena di Verona, this festival offers opera lovers the opportunity to enjoy performances in one of the world's best preserved Roman monuments.
Built in the 1st century AD during the reign of Augustus, the arena is the third largest amphitheatre in Europe after the Coliseum in Rome and the Campano in Naples. However, the Opera Festival programme could not contrast more with the games that once took place within.
Now in its 86th year, the season begins in traditional style with a production of Aida. Giuseppe Verdi's opera has been a longstanding favourite of the festival crowds ever since Giovanni Zenatello arranged the first programme in honour of the Italian composer.
The tribute to Verdi does not end there - a production of his Nabucco will be held in the Arena on June 22nd, while another of his works - Rigoletto - will bring the curtain down on proceedings.
Visitors to Verona can also enjoy Hugo de Ana's take on Giacomo Puccini's Carmen as well as Georges Bizet's Carmen, directed by Franco Zeffirelli.
