Rome and the Barbarians in Venice

Sat 26 Jan 2008 - Sun 20 Jul 2008

The relationship of the Roman Empire with the peoples of northern and eastern Europe forms the basis of Rome and the Barbarians, an exhibition running in Venice from January 26th to July 20th.

Hosted at the Palazzo Grassi, this historical exhibition brings together artefacts from the museums that have sought to preserve the treasures of the empire. Through these pieces, it is hoped the story of how the so-called Barbarians came to influence the development of Europe can be viewed.

It was in the third century that the Roman Empire began to have more frequent and more destructive encounters with those crossing its borders. By the late fifth century, the number and size of these incursions had resulted in the obliteration on the western part of the realm.

While, on a religious and cultural level, Rome retained its dominance on the continent through the subsequent centuries, the political landscape was shifting inalterably. The Ostrogoths, Lombards, Franks and Visigoths all began to control kingdoms in Europe.

This history is recounted across the three floors of the Palazzo Grassi, with guided tours on hand for those who have booked in advance.

The last palace to be erected in Venice before the fall of the republic, the 18th-century Palazzo is worth visiting if only to enjoy its beautiful canal-side location.

Enjoy a short break in Venice.
