Turin: World Design Capital 2008
Tue 1 Jan 2008 - Wed 31 Dec 2008
Next year will be perhaps the most exciting yet to visit Turin as it begins its reign as World Design Capital 2008.
Back in 2005, the city was singled out to be the first to hold the title in this new biennial competition. The World Design Capital banner is awarded by the International Design Alliance to cities where institutions, industry and designers are working together to enhance the experience and quality of life therein.
Turin claimed the honour of being the first to take on the mantle of World Design Capital on account of the city's international outlook. Indeed, the award has been used as an opportunity by planners to continue Turin's transformation from an industrial hub to a European focal point.
A range of events have been planned for 2008, with flexibility chosen as the byword for the year. Celebrations actually begin in 2007, with a New Year's Eve party launching the programme in Piazza Vittorio.
The rest of the year's events will be split over four quarters: public design, economy and design, education and design and design policies. Among the highlights will be the Flexibility exhibition, which examines the interaction between design and evolution, and Cars: Dreams and reality, which is a retrospective of Italian automobiles from 1950 to 2000.
Take a short break in Turin during a prestigious year in its history.
