Sat 29 Nov 2008 - Wed 31 Dec 2008

Visitors to Strasbourg around the festive season should not miss the city's Christmas market around the beautiful Cathedrale Notre-Dame and Place Broglie from November 29th to December 31st.

Those taking their break in Strasbourg can wrap up warm and shop for goodies beneath the lights of the huge Christmas tree on Place Kleber and lighting displays across the site.

Widely described as France's biggest event of its kind, this impressive spread is known to attract 1.6 million shoppers each year, according to the Times.

Stalls sell a range of handicrafts and handmade Christmas decorations, perfect for adding that something different to the festive interiors back home.

There are around 300 chalets in the artisan village to find the perfect presents for loved ones and in addition, visitors can take a break now and then to enjoy some mulled wine and tasty delicacies such as smoked sausage and gingerbread.

Plus, for the more energetic, there is an ice rink on the neighbouring Place du Chateau, further enhancing the wintry atmosphere.

As well as being the largest Christmas market in France, it is one of the oldest, as it dates back to 1570.

The Times describes the city as one of "the most warmly civilised" in the country and its market as "splendid".
