Women in the Sun exhibition in Prague

Thu 31 Jul 2008 - Fri 10 Oct 2008

From July 31st until October 10th, visitors to the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague, can enjoy an exhibition of work by three female sculptors at the historic Prague Castle.

Women in the Sun features the work of Vera Janouskova, Eva Kmentova and Alina Szapocznikow, all of who studied under Josef Wagner at the Czech Academy of Applied Arts.

According to abcprague.com: "Their distinctiveness, which grew out of the female experience, is expressed in three different ways of understanding the physical nature of this experience."

Prague Castle has been home to the offices of Czech monarchs, Holy Roman Emperors and presidents of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. According to the Guinness Book of Records, it is the biggest ancient castle in the world.

The Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia during the Second World War and Prague Castle became the headquarters of Reinhard Heydrich, the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. Heydrich was fatally wounded during an assassination attempt by the Czech resistance in 1942, resulting in bloody Nazi reprisals against the people of Prague.

Other exhibitions at the attraction include The Story of Prague Castle.
