Prague Christmas Markets
Sat 29 Nov 2008 - Thu 1 Jan 2009
The Czech capital of Prague is set to fill with festive cheer, smells and sights from November 29th to January 1st, with the arrival of the Christmas markets season.
Prague's main markets take place at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, where shoppers can enjoy a glass of hot wine known in the native tongue as svarene vino or svarak - while browsing for special gifts, with the squares situated within ten minutes walk of each other.
Housed in brightly-coloured wooden huts adorned with Christmas lights and decorations, the events are described by the Prague Experience as "among the best in Europe".
Traditional gifts range from quaint wooden toys and puppets to Czech bohemian glass and handmade jewellery, while local food and drink such as cured meats and Becherovska liquor would be a treat for any gastronomes back home.
Stalls will also be selling hot food such as sausages, corn on the cob and dumplings to sample in between present buying.
The magical atmosphere is further cemented by carol choirs and a massive Christmas tree in the Old Town Square, illuminated at night against the impressive backdrop of the buildings surrounding it.
Other locations which come alive with stalls and music are located at the Havelske trziste and Republic Square.
Be merry with the Prague Christmas Markets.
