The French Open in Paris
Tue 20 May 2008 - Sun 8 Jun 2008
One of the premier annual events on the tennis calendar, the Roland Garros French Open in Paris takes place this year between May 20th and June 8th.
Year after year, the elite players from the sport arrive in Paris to compete at this, the second grand slam of the season. The roots of the tournament stretch back to the 19th century, when the event was strictly for domestic competitors, but its international reputation began to flourish in the post-war years.
The last event saw some fantastic tennis being played on the hallowed clay courts of the Roland Garros stadium. Rafael Nadal took the men's singles title after seeing off the challenge of Novak Djokovic, while the women's final, contested by Justine Henin and Jelena Jankovic, was won by the Belgian.
Not only can spectators enjoy watching such stars in action, but they can also sample the history that surrounds this prestigious tournament. Tours of the stadium take participants to the inner sanctum of the venue, with an English-speaking guide leading the way through the changing rooms, players' area and the media centre.
Additionally, visitors can head to the Tenniseum, which contains more than 4,000 hours of archive footage, and dine at the Roland Garros restaurant.
Take a sports-filled break in Paris.
