Munich: Munich hosts Kandinsky exhibition

Sat 25 Oct 2008 - Sun 22 Feb 2009

The Lenbachhaus in Munich presents the Wassily Kandinsky - Absolute Abstract Retrospective 2008/2010 from October 25th to February 22nd.

It joins the New York Guggenheim Museum and Paris' Centre Pompidou in showcasing the largest collections of work by a pioneer of abstraction and modernism, whose non-objective art has become globally known.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866 - 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist who studied his craft in Munich and is now known for his works of rich colour and imagination.

As the artist himself theorised: "And so a 'new world of art' is juxtaposed to the 'world of nature'. This 'world of art' is just as real, just as concrete. For this reason I prefer to call so-called 'abstract art' 'concrete art'."

To honour the artist the three venues are planning to collaborate in hosting the event, which is set to include around 90 paintings from various periods of Kandinsky's creative life.

Works such as A Colourful Life (1907) and Light Picture (1913) will be available to view.

According to the official Lenbachhaus website, these collections have not been united on the large-scale before, which suggests a must-see for admirers of the artist's work.

It was recently reported several delicate pieces will travel from the Guggenheim to the Munich museum for the first time in decades, with loans also expected from the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts among others.
