Beer lovers of the world will very soon be packing their favourite steins and making the annual pilgrimage to Munich for the Oktoberfest - taking place this year between September 20th and October 5th.

As ever, the Theresienwiese will be the venue for this world-leading beer event, with a total of 14 tents set up onsite, from the traditional Schottenhamel beer hall to the Fischer-Vroni fish bar.

Attracting millions of enthusiasts every year, the Oktoberfest caters for a wide variety of tastes and age groups. For a more modern experience, the Hippodrom is the place to go, while the Weinzelt tent makes sure that those who prefer a glass of wine do not miss out.

Having been first held in 1810, the Oktoberfest is rooted in Bavarian tradition. That first celebration was held in honour of Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.

Gradually, as the popularity of the festival began to spread around the world, it was decided that the party would have to be longer - hence its modern September start date. This year will be the 175th time the event has taken place.

For those who enjoy the traditional side of the Oktoberfest, it is well worth getting there for the opening ceremony, when the first keg of beer is tapped.
