Rembrandt in Madrid

Wed 15 Oct 2008 - Tue 6 Jan 2009

From October 15th 2008 until January 6th 2009, visitors to the Spanish capital Madrid will be able to enjoy an exhibition of work by one of the world's greatest painters: Rembrandt.

Rembrandt: History Painter (Historias de Rembrandt) takes place at The Prado Museum (Museo del Prado) and includes 35 paintings and prints, on loan from galleries across Europe and America, by the renowned Dutch master.

The collection features work spanning the artist's life, from Two Old Men Disputing (St Peter and St Paul), one of his earlier works, to Bathsheba at Her Bath, painted in the years before Rembrandt's death.

A master of depicting light and shadow, Rembrandt lived from 1606 until 1669. In addition to a number of self-portraits, his most popular works of art include The Night Watch and The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp.

The museum itself is famous for housing the cream of European artworks by the likes of Goya, El Greco and Rubens.

Other exhibitions at The Prado Museum include The Renaissance Portrait which runs from June 3rd until September 7th.

Art-lovers visiting Madrid may also want to take the opportunity to visit the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofia Museum which houses Pablo Picasso's Guernica.
