Florence Marathon

Sat 22 Nov 2008

Held annually on the fourth Sunday of every November, this event is rightfully famed for its supportive crowds and beautiful surroundings.

Florence is one of the most picturesque cities to be found anywhere in the world and is always a favourite with tourists because of the fine scenery on offer. However on November 26th this year, many of the arrivals in the city will have little time to enjoy the view.

A top 20 world marathon, the Florence Marathon is a prestigious event taken seriously by the majority of participants. Over 6,000 runners descend on the city every year for the run, while crowds always turn out in huge numbers – regardless of the weather – to lend their support.

The main action takes place in the men's and women's events, although there is also a mini-run, known as the Ginky Run, for child competitors.

This is an incredibly glamorous marathon, thanks to its beautiful location and the route of the run, which takes competitors past such famous landmarks as the Ponte alla Vittoria, past the cathedral along the Piazza del Duomo, before finishing at the Piazza Santa Croce.

For those who do not feel energetic enough to participate, walking the course with the crowds and cheering on the athletes can be an enjoyable way to spend a short break in Florence.
