Dresden International Dixieland Festival

Wed 14 May 2008 - Sun 18 May 2008

Dresden swings to the sound of jazz during the International Dixieland Festival, which is coming to the city between May 14th and 18th.

This musical extravaganza has been part of Dresden's cultural calendar since 1971. Officially opening on May 14th at the Kulturpalast, the festival features a huge range of performances and events, turning Dresden into an old-time jazz haven.

Venues across the city get involved in the programme, from the Strassenbahnmuseum to the Hotel Hilton. A lot of the bands performing come from Germany - such as Dresden's own Blue Wonder Jazz Band and the Thomas Steltzer Trio.

However, many more come from around Europe - the Pete Allen Jazz Band from the UK, for example - and there is even an Australian presence in the form of The Jazz Factory.

Among the highlights of the events that take place are the Riverboat Shuffle, which sees what organisers promise is the oldest and largest steamboat fleet taking to the Elbe river, and the Dixieland International concert which takes place on May 16th.

Perhaps the most spectacular aspect of the festival is the closing Dixieland Parade, which sees a convoy of 15 trucks heading through the streets towards a fairground party at the Pieschener Allee.

If nothing else, this celebration allows visitors to sample the joys of Dresden. Sights worth sampling while in the city include the Frauenkirche Church and the Zwinger.

Head to Dresden for a short break this summer.
