Bregenz Festival

Wed 23 Jul 2008 - Sat 23 Aug 2008

For a summer of spectacular cultural happenings, there are few destinations more worthy of a visit than Bregenz. Between July 23rd and August 23rd, the town's waterfront and leading venues welcome a range of productions for an unforgettable month of music and performance.

There is perhaps no better place to start an exploration of Bregenz than at the cusp of Lake Constance. This fact has not escaped planners, who have constructed a floating stage upon the water.

It is on this stage that the flagship production of this year's festival will be held. Puccini's Tosca, directed by Ulf Schirmer and Phillipp Himmelmann, will be running from July 23rd, placing the classic tale of rivalry and love against the bewitching backdrop of the lake at dusk.

This setting will also be used for a concert of music from films. Sergei Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky will be screened on the floating stage while the Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra play the score, written by Prokofiev.

Not all of the events take place outdoors, however. The Festival House will be the venue for Ernst Krenek's opera Karl V, while his Last Dance Around St Stephen will run at the Kornmarkt. There will also be a number of orchestral concerts and cross-cultural activities during the festival.

Head to Bregenz this summer and enjoy a unique cultural experience.
