Beethovenfest in Bonn
Thu 28 Aug 2008 - Sun 28 Sep 2008
Bonn celebrates one of its most famous sons -Ludwig van Beethoven - during Beethovenfest, running from August 28th to September 28th.
An annual event, the Beethovenfest has been held in its present form since 1998, though its roots date back to 1845. The festival has brought some of the finest conducters, orchestras and soloists to Bonn, as well as showcasing young and emerging talent.
Over the years, the likes of Alfred Brendel, Kurt Masur, Lorin Maazel and Hélène Grimaud have been in attendance, with concerts taking place in the Beethovenhalle and Beethoven-Haus but also in churches, state buildings and even in industrial and commercial settings.
In 2008, the theme for the festival is 'Macht. Musik', with the focus on music that has been produced during times of political unrest. Works by Beethoven that were misappropriated by the Nazi party will be played alongside the music of George Gershwin, which was outlawed by the same regime.
To make it easier to explore Beethovenfest, organisers have divided it into a range of themed sections. For example, those purely interested in hearing the German's compositions may like to consult the Beethoven Pure programme, while works inspired by those pieces can be found in the Inspirations section.
