Be in Barcelona on Catalonia's national day
Thu 11 Sep 2008
Catalonia celebrates its national day on September 11th and warmly invites visitors to join in the fun.
A trip to Barcelona at this time of year could see you commemorating the fall of the city in 1714 - needless to say this is an event steeped in history.
The Siege of Barcelona defeat during the War of Spanish Succession is marked these days with a national holiday and the making of huge seafood Paellas in village squares such as Cornudella de Montsant.
Political parties and other Catalan organisations traditionally lay floral offerings at the monuments of General Moragues and Rafael Casanova - to pay respect for their fight against the Bourbon army - making a colourful and traditional scene.
There will be concerts, demonstrations, parades and celebrations across Barcelona, while the ubiquitous red and yellow stripes of the Catalonian flag are proudly displayed.
One of the main meeting points is theFossar de le Moreles, where locals meet to pay homage to those who defended their city. This is a great place to soak up the vibrant atmosphere and maybe get a bit of a history lesson as well.
Why not see for yourself with a break in Barcelona.
