Colours of the night in Amsterdam
Fri 13 Feb 2009 - Sun 7 Jun 2009
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam will host an exhibition of the great artist's work between February 13th and June 7th, where paintings evoking a nocturnal atmosphere will be the main focus.
Since he was a young boy, Van Gogh had a fascination with the night time and the feelings it created inside him, believing it to be a period for both creativity and reflection.
It was during this part of the day the painter loved working, drawing inspiration from the elements around him which were bathed in the twilight of the dying day and this remained with him throughout his life.
Drawing security and solace from the early hours, Van Gogh conjured up some of his most striking paintings when faced with landscapes kissed by the battle between darkness and light.
Colours of the Night is the first display of its kind to concentrate on his representations of the evening time, exploring elements of symbolism and how he married these with issues such as living on a farm and the fight to embrace modernity.
International collectors have donated some of his most famous work for the exhibition, with pieces such as Eugene Boch, The Starry Night and The Potato Eaters.
Enjoy the beauty of the night on your Amsterdam break.
