Zaragoza - a hidden Spanish gem

18th October 2007

Located midway between Barcelona and Madrid, Zaragoza has for too long sat in the shadow of those two perennial favourites. Those who take the time to explore this less famous city will quickly discover what a jewel in the Spanish crown it is.

Zaragoza is by no means a small player. It is the capital of the province of the same name and of the Aragon region and is the fifth-largest city in Spain. Popular with international businesses as a conference hub and a beacon for students, Zaragoza is a modern and vibrant place to stay.

Nor is this a new phenomenon. Located on the banks of the river Ebro, Zaragoza has been a sought-after strategic point for centuries, with Arab, Roman and, ultimately, Aragonese rule arriving in the city through its history.

Thesedifferent phases in the city's life, as well as its positioning between Castille, Navarra, Aragon and the old Muslim kingdom, have ensured a diversity and inclusiveness in Zaragoza that manifests itself in the friendliness of its people today. Additionally, it has benefited from glare of tourism being focused elsewhere, having retained much of its unique character.

While there are countless ways to stay busy in Zaragoza, a visit to the casco viejo - the historic city centre - is a great way to start, with its blend of Romanesque and Moorish architecture. The El Pilar square is home to La Seo cathedral and the basilica, while a trip further out of town leads visitors to the spectacular Arab palace of the Aljafería.

Take a short break in Zaragoza.
