Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw
18th January 2007
Warsaw's Palace of Culture and Science has a controversial history but remains one of the most fascinating buildings in Poland.
The Palace was a controversial structure from the moment it was announced in 1952. Designed as a 'gift' from Stalin, the building was constructed by 3,500 workers from the Soviet Union and was originally named the Joseph Stalin Palace of Culture and Science. Stalin died before the building was complete and his name was promptly removed from its title.
Designed by architect Lev Rudnyev, the imposing building can be seen from miles away and combines Russian and Polish architectural styles. The tower is designed in the style of Soviet skyscrapers but the pillars and parapets are similar to those found on the Sukiennice Cloth Hall in Krakow.
The Palace is the tallest building in Poland and contains an unrivalled set of cultural attractions. Inside are over 3,000 rooms, including several theatres, concert rooms and cinemas. Famous names to have performed there include the Rolling Stones, Pavarotti and Marlene Dietrich.
Numerous exhibitions are held in the conference room, which holds over 3,000 people. Recent shows have included displays on the history of football and the concept of time. Events for 2007 include an international gastronomy fair and a look at regional architecture.
The building's 30th floor allows visitors to step out onto a viewing platform that provides stunning views of the city. The platform is open until midnight and helps make the Palace an unmissable destination for anyone enjoying a weekend break in Warsaw.
