Vienna's Christmas Market

The Christmas market in the heart of Vienna attracts stalls selling a wide variety of food, gifts and crafts.
Vienna's Rathausplatz is filled with stalls, adorned with pretty festive lights, from November 12th until December 24th and the centrepiece of the event is a huge Christmas tree which stands proud in front of the ancient city hall.
Wooden craftwork features heavily in the market and hundreds of gift ideas can be found among the stalls. Along with the traditional trinkets there is also a large selection of food for visitors to enjoy while wandering through, including Viennese favourites such as glazed fruits and baked apples.
Vienna's Rathousplatz Christmas market is over 700 years old, so this really is one of the cultural high points in the Viennese diary and many locals join the visitors to carry out their Christmas shopping, making for a wonderful atmosphere.
There is also plenty for children to enjoy, from the traditional merry-go-round and donkey rides, to the present-making and cookie-baking workshops which take place in the city hall itself, allowing parents to get on with the serious business of Christmas shopping!
Vienna's Christmas market is a lively and attractive place, making festive shopping a much more enjoyable experience and the ideal way to spend a short break before the holiday season gets into full swing.
