Vienna Festival

6th March 2007

When better to visit the Austrian capital of Vienna than when it is alive with music, art and performance? During the Vienna Festival, running from May 11th to June19th 2007, the city will be just that.

Vienna has long been the cultural and economic centre of Austria and is famous for its music halls, theatres and opera houses. Many of these, such as the Burgtheater and the Theater an der Wien, will be used during the festival.

Luc Bondy – the festival's curator – has brought together 32 productions and 165 performances from around the globe to make for a truly pan-cultural experience.

One of the many highlights of the programme is sure to be Nigel Jamieson's grand physical theatre piece Honour Bound, which depicts the tale of an Australian held prisoner at Guantanamo Bay and has been described by the Sydney Morning Herald as "shatteringly good". Honour Bound runs at MuseumsQuartier from May 22nd to 25th.

For music lovers, the 33rd International Music Festival will be running concurrent to the theatrical programme, with performances at the Wiener Konzerthaus focussing this year on works of the 20th century. International guests will include the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra.

And for a fantastic glimpse into the future of Vienna, visitors can take in the Into the City series of events, which includes tours of new bands' rehearsal rooms and a party aboard a boat on the Danube.

A view of a city steeped in history that is as much about where it is headed as it is where it has been, the Vienna Festival remains a highlight of the capital's cultural calendar and a must-see for its many visitors.
