New Year's Day Concert in Vienna

25th October 2006

The annual New Year's concert in Vienna is one of the most famous performances in the world, with a long tradition of superlative performances and a series of renowned conductors queuing up to orchestrate the event.

The concert is so well thought of that there are not one but two dress rehearsals, on December 30th and December 31st, that are open to the public and treated as events in their own right. With tickets at a premium, it is no surprise that the rehearsals are usually as popular as the main event itself.

The 2007 programme once again features the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and is broadcast live around the world from the Golden Hall in the Vienna Musikverein, which is itself considered to be one of the finest concert halls in the world, rivalled only by the Boston Symphony Hall.

Musically, the concert celebrates the work of Vienna's most famous sons, the Strauss family. Several encores gradually culminate in annual renditions of the Blue Danube Waltz and the Radetzky March. But renditions of works by other composers are not uncommon, with Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro being chosen in 2006.

The Indian born conductor Zubin Mehta is returning to conduct in 2007, and with a predicted global audience of one billion the concert is set to enthral crowds for years to come.
