Royal grandeur at Versailles
22nd May 2006
As well as being one of the most popular places to visit on a day trip from Paris, Versailles is also a pleasant base for a break to France and is extremely well linked to the capital with several train lines.
Located just over ten miles from the centre of Paris, Versailles is a wealthy suburb made famous by its palace and royal connections.
The Palace of Versailles is a breathtaking example of the extravagance of the monarchy before the revolution, with a spectacular Hall of Mirrors, the Orangerie, Chapel Royal and Grand Lodgings all continuing to take visitors' breath away as much now as they did in the 18th century.
As well as being home for the monarchy, the palace was the seat of government and a showcase of French arts and craftsmanship. Marie-Antoinette's Petit Hameau provides a relief from all the grandiose architecture, with its simpler style and pretty gardens.
The rest of the palace's grounds are spectacular in their size and design, with visitors treated to forests, canals and formal gardens.
With so much on offer in such a short distance from the centre of Paris, it is no wonder that the palace remains one of the most popular destinations for those on a break to the capital.
