Gordon Ramsay makes French foray with Versailles restaurant

Versailles's Trianon Palace Hotel is the setting of the latest gourmet venture by Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay.

Today marks the first day of service at the eatery and Ramsay is hungry for success in his new French venture, which includes room service, a brasserie and fine dining experience.

He told the Times: "This is the one I'll be judged on. This is the cradle of haute cuisine."

Visitors hoping to get a taste of Ramsay's culinary delights in the hotel where history was made in 1919 during the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, are advised to book well in advance.

Indeed, Ramsay's website states that reservations are taken by phone only and "exactly two calendar months prior to the requested booking date".

Gordon Ramsay au Trianon is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.

Fine food is a theme that runs through nearly everything in Versailles, making it an excellent destination for foodies.

Louis XIV's culinary passion is relived in Versailles's market stalls selling fresh local produce, while fromageries, wine shops and patisseries dotted around the area means visitors will be spoilt for choice when it comes to food options.

Ramsay also praised the quality of local produce found at the markets, telling the Times there are sea bass and John Dory weighing two kilograms each available at Versailles market - "and that's just for the locals - you'd struggle to find that at a specialist supplier in London".
