Tuscan art in Venice
25th March 2008
Venice's Arthemisia museum plays host to a magnificent exhibition that highlights the expansive Tuscan collection of a great Italian economist and art appreciator until July 27th.
I Macchiaioli celebrates the collection of Mario Taragoni, who collected numerous 19th-century works of Tuscan art during a 40-year period that ended in the 1970s.
Reportedly based on a selection of essays about the group of artists - such as Ugo Ojetti, Mario Tinti and Enrico Somare - known as the Macchiaioli, Taragoni built up a collection of work.
According to the museum's website, he based his choice of what pieces to purchase not on the views of art critics or dealers, instead opting to follow the opinions of literary essays.
The show has been supported by Taragoni's family, resulting in the extensive collection that art lovers can now see in the Arthemsia.
Among the pieces on show, the website notes, are Ritratto di Signora (Portrait of a Lady) and Donna con scialle rosa (Woman with pink shawl).
According to the Arthemisia website, it has some 11,000 works on display.
