More than just the canals in Venice
7th March 2006
Think of Venice and the first thing which comes to mind is usually the large expanse of rivers and canals, populated by romantic couples floating effortlessly in gondolas.
While this may be an important part of the attraction of the Italian city for many, there is much more to offer in Venice than the simple, relaxing majesty of the canals.
Doge's Palace is one of the most symbolic parts of the ancient city and is a perfect starting place for travellers, offering an insight into the rich history of the area. First established in the ninth century, the building's arches are a symbol of Italian opulence in the 12th century when it was redeveloped, as are its famous gold staircase and the various statues which populate its frontage.
St Mark's Square is usually filled with tourists, flocking to see the beauty of the buildings in and around the area, as well as the famous bell tower which overlooks the city and out to sea.
Another famous site in this beautiful city is the Bridge of Sighs, which connects the Palace of Justice and the ancient jails. Its name is said to stem from the fact that, when in use as a bridge for prisoners to cross, those below could hear the sighs of prisoners being taken to the jail, as they realised there was not chance of escape. Few jails in the world could have such a beautiful entrance as this and the bridge is best seen from the canal below.
Venice is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in the world and its incredible architecture is clear for al to see, with some of the most amazing sights for travellers.
