La Regata delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare in Venice
30th March 2007
On June 2nd, Venice is host to one of Italy's most historic and emblematic boat races – La Regatta delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare.
The annual event is held in each of Italy's maritime republics – Genoa, Venice, Pisa and Amalfi – on a rotational basis. This year, it is Venice's turn, providing visitors with a unique chance to sample the city's historical character along with its undoubted romantic qualities.
Teams of contestants from the four boating cities compete for the prize. In a celebration of their medieval history, the teams are draped in their traditional colours and carry banners depicting their symbolic animals. To blend in with the locals, cheer on the team in green that is branded with the figure of St Mark's Lion.
N o quarter is given as the teams battle for the pride of their city in this televised battle. Last year's host Amalfi has won emerged victorious in the last three races, so a vociferous local support from the Venetians can be expected.
Beforethe race takes place, a splendid procession floats by, providing a richly colourful celebration of events in the cities' histories.
For example, Venice's contribution represents the arrival of the Queen of Cyprus and Jerusalem into the city's harbour.
Venice has traditionally been a strong competitor in this event and its team will be looking to some restore the port's pride this year. For an altogether different Venetian experience, why not try La Regatta delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare.
