A wealth of opportunity in Utrecht
15th June 2006
Utrecht is an historic European city that has moved into the 21st century to become a modern and busy centre for commerce and tourists.
Cafes line the city's streets and spill over into the sidewalks during the summer, giving the city a wonderful atmosphere.
Along with the scenic old bridges and historical sites, Utrecht is also fast gaining a reputation for its shopping. While it may not have the fashion status of Milan or Paris, Utrecht is becoming a top destination for shoppers and attracts a range of stores, from higher end boutiques to more affordable shops.
The city is most famous for its Dom Tower, which is the tallest tower in the Netherlands and allows fantastic views over a large area of the city and surrounding region. Built in the 14th century, it is also one of the oldest structures in Utrecht.
Another part of the old heritage of Utrecht is the Statenjacht, an 18th century ship which is currently being restored to its original glory and is a stunning example of the region's seafaring history.
Utrecht also has numerous fortresses which are no longer in use but which provide a wonderful opportunity to see some of the beauty of Utrecht and the local area. Located in some of the most scenic parts of the region, the castles have become popular tourist attractions.
