Ulm
29th November 2006
Located on the banks of the river Danube, Ulm is a city of great cultural and historical significance. The seat of the University of Ulm, the city is also the birthplace of Albert Einstein.
Ulm pays its tribute to the famous physicist with a memorial near the train station, which was the site of Einstein's home before it was destroyed during World War II. But the city has much more to offer than a simple tribute to its most famous son.
The Ulm Munster cathedral is the tallest church in the world and dominates the skyline of the city. Designed in the finest Gothic style, the cathedral also features famous interiors. The elaborately decorated choir stalls, busts and figures on the altar have long since secured their places in the history of art.
The public library, a glass pyramid designed by renowned architect Gottfried Bohm which rivals Paris' own Louvre Pyramid, provides a more modern example of architectural mastery.
The city is understandably proud of its heritage, and the annual Oath week, held at the end of July, commemorates the signing of the city constitution in 1397. Revellers spend the Monday joining in an unusual procession– it takes place on a boat floating down the Danube. An extraordinary light display then illuminates the river once night falls.
The Ulm Theatre puts on plays, operas and musicals all year round, as a variety of performers hope to emulate famous conductor Herbert von Karajan. Widely considered to be the most recorded conductor in the world, von Karajan began his career in the city's own theatre. With so much to offer, Ulm is a great destination for a European short break.
