Visit the town of Tours
27th March 2006
Tours is situated in the scenic Loire Valley, on the banks of the Cher and the Loire river. The town has a charming beauty and is well-regarded for its excellent food and wine.
The small size of the French town makes it an excellent place to walk around, observing the splendid architecture of the many old houses, old churches such as the Notre Dame la Riche, fascinating museums and quaint shops, while taking a break at one of the top bars and restaurants on rue Colbert.
One of the highlights of Tours is the gothic Cathedral St Gatien, which dates back to the 13th century and has magnificent stained-glass windows, located in the old centre.
The Musee des Beaux-Arts sits next to the cathedral and houses an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures, including works by Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Boucher. The building itself is a former 17th century archiepiscopal palace and the rooms are decorated with silks and Louis XVI paneling.
Tours also has a grand train station and several interesting 19th century government buildings. The town has something on offer for people of all ages and tastes and makes an great choice for a weekend break.
