The variety of The Hague
26th June 2006
The royal setting of The Hague provides visitors with some stunning sights and beautiful buildings. Although it is not the capital of the Netherlands, The Hague is the seat of power, with both the royal family and the government residing here.
Many cultural events and concerts take place in the square in front of the beautiful Het Binnenhof, where the Dutch Parliament still meets. This historic building looks like a cross between a mediaeval castle and cathedral and is surrounded in the square by numerous ornate structures. Guided tours around the Parliament building include visits to the Ridderzaal, or Knight's Hall, which was built in the 13th century and has remained the centre of Dutch politics ever since.
Another stunning building is the Peace Palace, a gift from America's Andrew Carnegie to The Hague, which will no doubt remind visitors from the UK of London's Westminster Palace. And this structure has an even more important function, housing the International Court of Justice. The exquisite bell tower and Swiss clock are just some of the features of this magnificent building which make the Peace Palace an unmissable sight.
However, for those who want to get away from the tourist trail and enjoy a break from sightseeing, The Hague also offers the chance to unwind on the beach. Situated on the North Sea coast, The Hague's beaches are never particularly hot sunbathing spots. However, the main beach resort of Scheveningen, in the northwestern part of the city, is a popular destination for many young people and enjoys over ten million visitors per year. Its popularity stems from the impressive surf, as well as the variety of fish stalls and restaurants which line the beachfront.
The Hague therefore offers something different for visitors on a short break to the city, allowing them to enjoy wonderfully ornate, ancient buildings as well as taking time out to relax on the beach.
