St Malo - the Walled City

27th June 2006

St Malo is a popular tourist destination, thanks to its various historical sights. An ancient city, it is still surrounded by a defensive wall, which traces its routes to the early monastic settlement that arrived here in the 6th century.

St Malo has a long and distinguished history and at one time declared itself an independent state, meaning that its walls became an important part of its attempts to remain separate from the rest of France. While this attempted freedom did not last long, the walls have remained and now encapsulate a modern port city, albeit with a large number of impressive historical buildings.

For more information on the city's fascinating history, a visit to the Chateau is required. Once described as the Bastille of the west as a symbol of Royal power, this structure now houses the history museum, as well as the town hall.

The famous French writer, politician and diplomat, François-René de Chateaubriand, is buried in St Malo, the place of his birth. His tomb, on the Ile de Grand Bé, brings people from around the world to pay their respects to this incredible intellectual, who died in Paris during the 1848 Revolution.

Dominating the city's skyline is the imposing cathedral which has managed to transcend both Gothic and Romanesque periods with its design.
