A relaxing break in Spa
5th November 2007
Planning a break away from the pressures of modern life? Then where better than Spa, the city which gave its name to relaxation.
It was the Romans who first stumbled upon the tranquil charms of the area, located in a valley between the Ardennes hills, and gave it its famous moniker.
Through the following centuries, Spa became recognised throughout Europe for the healing powers of its hot springs. It is no coincidence that the word 'spa' has come to be used widely in English to mean a place of relaxation or a thermal bath.
Spa, however, is not just famous for its water - it is also of interest to enthusiasts of modern history. During World War I, the German forces set up their headquarters at the Hôtel Brittanique. The building can still be viewed, though it is now used as a boarding school.
Those looking to unwind without getting their hair wet will also find much to keep them entertained in Spa. Every Sunday, a market takes place in the city, and there is also a sightseeing train to take visitors to some of the more prominent landmarks.
If feeling lucky, a visit to the casino may be in order, if only to see what is thought to be the oldest such club in the world. Spa is also home to the Belgian grand prix, attracting thousands of formula one fans every year.
Take a city break in Spa.
