Wine and Letters in Sorrento

8th January 2007

Sorrento overlooks the Bay of Naples and has long been popular with visitors looking for spectacular scenery and a relaxing atmosphere.

The city has a long literary heritage, with legend telling of how Sorrento was founded by Liparus, the grandson of Ulysses and the witch Circe. Sorrento developed into a major destination around 200 years ago, and was soon visited by famous authors such as Dickens, Keats, Byron and Goethe.

Sorrento is also famous for its drink production, thanks in part to orange and lemon groves found in and around the city. The lemon liqueur Limoncello is made in Sorrento, and an advisor to Pope Paul III in the 16th century famously called Sorrentian wine "a true gentleman's wine".

Cultural events in the city include the Sorrento International Music Festival, held in July and August every year and showcasing classical and jazz music. The International Cinema Festival has been running for over 40 years and is held in December every year.

The Correale Museum houses archaeological remains from the Greek and Roman cultures that once controlled the city, along with a permanent exhibition to the poet Torquato Tasso, who was born in Sorrento in the 16th century. The upper floors of the museum house furniture and precious porcelain from the 18th century Neapolitan and Sicilian traditions.

Ancient Greek walls and Roman villas are still found throughout the city, helping make Sorrento's long history fascinating for both locals and visitors alike.
