Tuscan splendour in Siena

23rd May 2006

Tuscany is famous for its beautiful hill top towns and villages and Siena is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular of these.

Located in northern Tuscany, the town can easily be visited for a day from Florence or Rome, but with so much to do in such beautiful surroundings, Siena is worthy of a city break dedicated solely to it.

Visitors will find the winding medieval streets within the town's walls easy to navigate on foot with all the attractions within walking distance of each other.

The city is rich with religious buildings and artefacts, the most famous of these being the grand and imposing Duomo. The cathedral has a green and white striped façade and an ornate interior with beautiful marble flooring.

The 13th century Basilica di San Francesco, the Basilica di San Domenico and the Sanctuary of St Catherine of Siena are also worth a visit for those looking to soak up Italy's rich religious past.

Siena's Piazza del Campo is the secular centre, with the sloping amphitheatre of a square lying next to the dramatic 13th century Palazzo Publico and lined with numerous shops and cafes.

Although visitors will delight in Siena at any time of year, those visiting during the Palio horserace on July 2nd and August 16th will have an extra treat in viewing one of Italy's most dramatic events.
