San Sebastian - a north Spanish jewel

4th March 2008

Sitting at the frontier of the Basque country, the refined San Sebastian is a city perfectly placed to begin a tour of the region.

Much like its Catalan cousin Barcelona, San Sebastian - named after the city's patron saint - benefits from both a lively, modern atmosphere and its location on the coast. Found at the northernmost tip of Spain on the Bay of Biscay, San Sebastian boasts an array of golden beaches that attract those with a taste for the finer things.

And yet, through the hustle of the visitors, you can also sense the history of San Sebastian reverberating in its many landmark buildings. Though many landmarks have been rebuilt after wars and the city walls are long gone, there remains a timeless beauty, manifesting in sights such as the San Vicente church, the old quarter or the majestic Miramar palace.

Known as Donostia in the local dialect, San Sebastian is nothing if not a good host. That fact is never more evident than during the several festivals the city holds. Among the pick are the jazz festival and the international jazz festival, while the carnival that takes place every winter is a great chance to see San Sebastian in full flow.

Why not spend some time in San Sebastian.
