The Sound of Music in Salzburg
5th February 2007
You cannot think about Salzburg without conjuring up the image of Julie Andrews and the seven Von Trapp children dancing and singing around its beautiful green mountains in the Sound of Music.
The Austrian city has long been associated with the Rogers & Hammerstein musical, which tells the tale of a nun who becomes the governess to a solemn naval captain's seven children, brings music into their lives and finds love with the handsome captain – all set against the backdrop of Salzburg and the Second World War.
And the tourism industry in Salzburg has certainly taken advantage of the association, with a host of different events and tours for visitors to enjoy.
Visitors to the area can walk in Maria Von Trapp's footsteps and travel to some of the famous locations depicted in the movie. Whether it's the Benedictine Convent in Nonnberg where the nuns sing How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria at the start of the film, or the Mirabell Gardens and Mirabell Palace where the children first learn Do-Re-Mi.
Some of Salzburg's most beautiful scenes are captured during Maria's song I Have Confidence in Me as she makes her way from Nonnberg Convent to the Trapp Villa, across Residenz Square and the beautiful Residenz Fountain.
Salzburg provides a number of tours for fans of the musical, who want to explore some of the famous locations up close.
