The cream of the classical world at Salzburg Festival
1st March 2007
Some of the world's greatest classical music performers gather each year to perform at the Salzburg Summer Festival, which will be held from July 27th to August 21st in 2007.
Five weeks' worth of musical performances make the festival the focus of the city's attention during the summer months, not least in 2006 when the event staged all 22 of Mozart's operas, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Salzburg's most famous son.
The festival began in 1877, with famous names such as Toscanini and Bruno Walter among those to have conducted at the event. The Trapp Family Singers, later immortalised in The Sound of Music, played the festival in 1936.
This year's event is subtitled The Nocturnal Side of Reason, and will investigate the turn from emotional confusion to logical thought found at the end of operas such as Mozart's own Cosi Fan Tutte.
Famous conductors due to perform at the event this summer include Nikolas Harnoncourt and Daniel Barenboim, who will both have the talents of the Vienna Philharmonic under their command.
Works by Haydn, Berlioz and Mahler will be performed along with a series of plays including A Midsummer Night's Dream. Premieres include Requiem for a Metamorphosis by the Troubleyn/Jan Fabre production company. With old and new pieces being performed by the world's finest exponents of classical music, the Salzburg Festival always proves to be an unforgettable experience.
