Hellbrunn Palace in Salzburg
16th February 2007
The Hellbrunn Palace in Salzburg is one of the most spectacular structures in Europe and has remained largely unchanged since its construction in the early 17th century.
The palace and surrounding park were built on the orders of Markus Sittikus, Salzburg's Prince Archbishop, from 1613 to 1619. Designed as a summer palace and daytime residence, despite its size the Hellbrunn does not contain a bedroom.
Inside the palace are a number of elaborate murals and frescos, with Chinese styles and frescos created by Donato Mascagni among the patterns on display. A toy theatre built in 1750 displays men at work at various professions, while a glass gazebo in the gardens was famously used as a key location in the Sound of Music.
The gardens themselves display the Archbishop's unique sense of humour, with a number of trick fountains producing unannounced jets of water when visitors least expect it.
Hellbrunn's garden setting is also host to a zoo and a rock theatre, which hosted one of the first performances of L'Orfeo by Monteverdi in 1616. The nearby Monatschlossl now holds ethnographic exhibits from the Carolina Augusteum Museum. With over 450,000 visitors drawn to the palace every year, the Hellbrunn remains one of Austria's most enduring attractions.
