Lively and historic Rouen

31st May 2006

Rouen, the capital of Normandy and one of the largest ports in France, is a bustling and vibrant city with plenty of fantastic attractions to keep visitors very busy.

One of the highlights of the historic city is the great Cathédrale Notre-Dame, which has been immortalised by Monet in his paintings. The two towers provide excellent examples of Gothic architecture, while the main door, Porte Central, is surrounded with sculptures of the Tree of Jesus.

The Église St-Maclou is another example of a flamboyant Gothic building, which dates back to the 13th century and contains pictures detailing the church's destruction and restoration.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts is one of the best provincial museums in France, with a huge collection of art from medieval times to contemporary pieces. Art fans can enjoy works by masters such as Monet, Rubens, Caravaggio and Poussin.

Rouen has several other interesting museums, such as the Musée de la Céramique, whichincludes the 17th century Rouen faience among the many exhibits.

There are many more attractions on offer in Rouen, with something to suit all tastes, making it an excellent choice for a short city break.
