Rome Marathon
17th October 2006
The annual marathon in Rome is one that competitors and spectators alike always look forward to, the glamorous location and related events meaning it becomes more than just a race.
Beginning in the shadow of the ancient Coliseum, the marathon passes by St Peter's Basilica, the Pantheon and a host of other famous sites before returning to the Coliseum for the grandstand finish. With so many landmarks to take in, spectators would be forgiven for only keeping one eye on the race itself.
The race has witnessed a series of memorable events over the past few years, with the 2000 marathon beginning in St Peter's Square immediately following the Angelus speech of Pope John Paul II. Since then race records have regularly been broken, with Italy's own Alberico Di Cecco delighting the home crowds when he set the current fastest time in 2005.
Spectators can choose to take in the race, or instead enjoy Marathon Village, set up three days beforehand. A celebration of the marathon, the 'village' is actually a series of music concerts and theatrical shows held across the city, which make for fitting precursors to the dazzle of this memorable event.
