Architects make historic discoveries at Palatine Hill

25th January 2007

Architects working to restore sections of Rome's Palatine Hill have made a number of new discoveries at the historic site, it has been revealed.

Work has unearthed a location that could be the legendary site where Romulus and Remus, founders of the city, were discovered and nurtured by a she-wolf.

Officials also announced that the Domus Aurea, a palace built by Roman emperor Nero, would be reopening from February 1st.

The Palatine was the centre of power in Ancient Rome, and is flanked by the Roman Forum and the Circus Maximus. However, little of the site itself is accessible to visitors, with over 300 ancient buildings remaining buried underground.

The ongoing reconstruction work, boosted by a recent €7 million governmental grant, led to the discovery of an underground cave lined with decorative objects and ancient artefacts, leading to speculation that it was a site of worship for Romans wanting to pay tribute to the city founders.

The minister for cultural heritage and fine arts also revealed that two other locations would be opened to the public before the end of the year. The House of Livia is set to re open after 30 years, while the House of Augustus, a two story building lined with elaborate frescos and discovered in July last year, is also to be made accessible.

The Palatine is one of the oldest remaining European locations, with people known to have lived there approximately 3,500 years ago, and remains a hugely popular destination for visitors to Rome.
