Rennes, the regional capital of Brittany, is a lively city with several excellent museums, beautiful architecture, some top restaurants and a vibrant nightlife, ensuring people of all tastes will thoroughly enjoy the city.
The Musée des Beaux Arts contains a fantastic collection of art, including pieces by Rubens, Botticelli and Gauguin, with a particular emphasis on French 17th century paintings.
Housed in the same grand building as the art museum is the Musée de Bretagne, which offers an insight into the history of the region in addition to the wonderful collection of archaeological pieces dating back to Neolithic times.
Rennes has many fine examples of architecture from the 16th century onwards, which have been well-preserved and highlight the rich history of the region. Some of the beautiful buildings that are highly recommended are the Hotel De Ville, Le Theatre and the grand Opera House.
For a relaxing break from sightseeing, the Jardin du Thabor is one of the most attractive gardens in France and is the ideal spot for a peaceful walk or picnic.
The city has a charming character and plenty of activities to keep visitors busy, making it a great place to spend a city break.
