Enjoying culture in Reims

Reims is one of the most beautiful and historic cities in France. With no less than four UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city, it is full of things to do and places to discover.
Probably the most famous sight in Reims is its Notre Dame cathedral, in the centre of the city and a wonderful example of gothic architecture. Established in the 13th century, it was the site for the coronation of French kings for many centuries.
Another site which has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status is the regal Tau Palace. Built close to the cathedral, it was once the home of the Archbishops of Reims and is today the cathedral's museum. This beautiful building offers visitors the chance to learn more about both the cathedral and the history of Reims, including the various monarchs and important figures who have graced the city down the centuries. With fine gardens, visitors can often be found taking strolls in the grounds, with the impressive buildings providing the backdrop.
Reims is also home to the largest Romanesque pilgrimage church in northern France, the Saint-Remi Basilica. This imposing building was begun as early as the 11th century and provides a powerful example of early gothic architecture.
The city of Reims is also in the heart of champagne country, based as it is in the Champagne-Ardenne region, and as such travellers to the region are often drawn to the vineyards which cover the nearby hills. The Lighthouse of Verzenay on the Montagne de Reims includes a vine museum which provides tourists with a fascinating insight into the champagne world, using some of the most modern audiovisual and cinematic techniques to educate visitors of one of France's oldest industries.
