Retreat to Ravello

19th May 2008

One of the many treasures that the Amalfi coast holds, Ravello has seduced generations of visitors over the centuries, from traders to travellers.

Located close to Amalfi and Capri, Ravello sits high in the mountains of Campania, looking out across the expanse of clear Mediterranean waters. With roots stretching back to the sixth century AD, the commune has a history and legend much in keeping with the neighbouring towns.

Flourishing as a centre of commerce in the medieval centuries, Ravello went on to become a haven for artists, composers and particularly writers. Perhaps the most famous admirer of its charms is Giovanni Boccaccio, who paid tribute to the city in his Decameron.

That popularity has continued into the modern age, with much of the architecture that has sprung up in days gone by remaining among the chief attractions. One of the most important sights is the duomo, or cathedral, located in the city centre. Built in the 9th century, the marble doors and mosaics are impressive features, as is the art collection within.

Also worth visiting are the 13th-century Villa Cimbrone, found close to the cathedral, and the modern Villa Rufolo, which boasts perhaps the best views across the city and the sea.

Take a short break in Ravello.
