The Summer Shakespeare Festival comes to Prague

12th June 2008

The Summer Shakespeare Festival comes to Prague from June until September.

Started by President Vaclav Havel in the 1990s, the event has evolved into the Czech Republic's biggest open-air theatre festival.

As usual, this year's festival will see al fresco performances of the bard's work against the picturesque backdrop of Prague's ancient castle.

Performances can also be seen in the colourful court of the Lichenstein Palace on Malostranské námestí no 13, located near St. Nicholas Cathedral.

The itinerary for the 2008 festival takes in The Comedy of Errors, directed by the renowned stage director Ivan Rajmont who is usually associated with the National Theatre in the Czech capital.

A Midsummer Night's Dream will also be performed for the first time, while an amazing performance of the 'post-fairytale" play Othello will return.

The Tempest will be performed by a trio of top Slovak showmen - Dušan Jamrich, Emil Horváth and Martin Huba - in the role of Prospero, while Jan Tríska will take up the role of the slave Kaliban.

Other plays being performed include As You Like It, The Merchant of Venice, Macbeth and Richard III.
