The Palace Gardens of Prague
25th July 2007
Visitors to Prague looking for a bit of tranquility might wish to explore the Palace Gardens, which are open until October 31st.
Thanks to the Prague Heritage Fund, these Baroque gardens were restored to their former glory in 1989 after years of neglect. Now, visitors are able to stroll among the grounds of Prague Castle and experience their beauty much in the same way as someone may have 200 years ago.
Five historic gardens make this one of the leading examples of Baroque gardening in Europe. The Ledebour Garden, the Small Palffy Garden, the Great Palffy Garden, the Kolowrat Garden and the Small Fürstenberg Garden all remain in the original style.
However, for all the terracing, architectural motifs and the central staircase of the Small and Great Gardens, there is also evidence that these gardens dated back to the 15th century, long before the Baroque design was introduced. It was only after the Swedish conquest of Prague in the 17th century that the owners began to look to Italy for inspiration.
There is more to the gardens than the beauty that lies within. Located on the south slope of the hill, the palace offers superb views of the city.
Last year, the gardens welcomed a record 86,000 visitors, while plans are afoot to increase the number of events held at this picturesque spot.
Take a stroll through history in Prague.
