Strolls along Prague's riverside
17th September 2007
Visitors to Prague have long marvelled at the Old Town Square, the Castle and Charles Bridge; but a trip to the Czech capital could soon have a whole new aspect with the building of a new promenade along the banks of the Vltava.
Slowly but surely, this area of Prague is being transformed in a bid to rival the spectacular riverside walks offered by other great European cities such as Amsterdam and Berlin. When complete in 2011, locals and visitors will be able to stroll the three miles between Vyehrad to tvanice Bridge.
The walkway along the Raínovo Embankment near the Jiráskuv Bridge is the first part of the stretch to be brought to life with stalls selling food and drink, though the Dvorákovo embankment has also been reinvigorated with traders.
Eventually, the plan is for the Vltava promenade to be a bustling area of Prague, with restaurants, open-air cinema and even a swimming pool proposed. Traditional Czech fare will be sold at the souvenir stalls - rather than the Russian dolls that populate many of the city's tourist shops - and there could even be a permanent fish market, should a temporary one prove popular.
Vitally, the idea behind the promenade is to return the river to the heart of the city's identity. Filip Dvorák, Prague 1 Councillor and the originator of the new plans, told the Prague Post: "We would like more harmony between the river and the city, to bring the river closer to the people." By the works' completion in four years' time, those dreams may well come true.
